Easter 2023 I was asked to do a treasure hunt. I wanted it to be special and a lot more than just crossword style clues. It had to have a story, it had to be clear how the treasure came to be in Gazzo and what in history led up to it. The result took two weeks of hard work to create but it was quite an adventure.
Welcome to Britalian
Britalian is a website all about British people who left Britian to live in beautiful Italy. Also I hope it will be interesting for the Italians that love us and also the Italians that, well, don't love us.
When you live in your mother land you are just like everybody else but when you live in another country suddenly you have a more interesting life because the people of that country either love you or they don't! So far for me it's been pretty OK and I get on well with most of the people I meet. However one reason for this is my belief that I am here to contribute and integrate. Good manners, respect for others and the language and culture can get you a long way.
I would at some point like to perhaps expand to cover Italians living in Britain, but since I am not in that position myself, I am hoping for contributions from someone who is.
I aspired to have this website in English and Italian but since I write in English and the majority of pages are about learning Italian it hasn't seemed to make sense to translate pages about learning Italian into Italian! In a way, I want to translate everything into Italian because I live in Italy and have an enthusiasm for Italian language and culture. I want that all Italians are able read what's here if they want to. The second major topic here has been Covid-19 but all the scientific papers I referenced were in English and it would have taken me so much time to translate the Covid-19 pages into Italian that I would have spent 75% of the time translating.
So my aspirations to have everything in Italian also, have failed at the moment and I feel pretty bad about it.
I had hoped to use esperanto as a third language because, I believed, unlike English it has a sensible system of spelling and unlike Italian it had sensible verbs, but there were irregularities in it I didn't like so now I am busy inventing another language entirely!
At this time this website is mostly written in English and is mostly about the Italian language. Though we might expect to see some comparative pages covering the differences in architecture, house wiring and plumbing, in the not to distant future. All these are things that effect me as a person new to the Italian way of life.
There are many greyed out menu items and also the flags, at the top of the page, for selecting the language appear faded when a translated page is not available. Sorry for these grayed out links but I feel it is a valuable way to show what still needs to be done.
If you would like to publish on this website do get in touch with the form below. Also please feel free to point out errors or suggest improvements. To report an error please give the title of the page it is on, a sample of the text that includes the error and then that text sample as it should be corrected. Having these three things means I can correct it and your effort will be of help.
